Tetris Couldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

As any major awards ceremony draws close, there’s always an outcry for the addition fresh award types to honor overlooked contributions and delight the hearts of followers who have specialized interests.

My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. So would strategy board titles, which is a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward just as with other single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case supporting my request remains most pressing above others. The demand is this: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains an essential concession within the realm of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications actually cover numerous genres, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Think about these recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges from a specific release, intense tile-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Which classification works within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles published annually without proper recognition in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition in any category during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked that year
  • Just some brain-teasers barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often small games, but the art of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as the most-played games globally and have been for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges well-known building titles competing to become highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. It would be easy to populate a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

Restating the point, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers operate at the demanding boundary of video game design, creating some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Just like film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait 35 years.
